My boy, Lucas, turned 5 this week. The item that he holds in his hand in the photo below is referred to as “The Future”.
His teacher created a game wherein she hides The Future and Luke and his classmates find it. Luke really took a liking to the game and he carries it with him everywhere he goes. When I asked him what the future is, he replied that he didn’t know. He gets really upset if he misplaces The Future. I think it’s really cool that a group of 5 year old kids carry the future around with them, even though they don’t know what it is. I figured that I wouldn’t burden him with an explanation at this point. I would prefer that he live in the present and not think about anything other than what he’s doing at the given moment, or maybe the next camping trip or baseball game.
It got me thinking about what other people think of the future and how they deal with it. Are you spending time doing what you really want to do, stuff that gets you really excited and that you enjoy? Can you contribute time or money to something that with improve the future of someone else? We have no idea whether our future will last for a few days or decades – we should probably spend our present in a way that makes us happy – that happiness may come in the form of helping others out. Keep in mind that your future starts today and you can do something really small to make a huge change.
Thoughts?
