DECIDE – the book – let’s make better decisions, together.

When is the last time you made a really big decision, or even a small one for that matter? Did you have access to all the input, feedback and expertise that you wish you had? Recently, it seems that many friends and others I know have been making life changing decisions. Many have asked for my advice which I happily give, yet, in many cases I don’t necessarily have the experience to provide the best guidance or insight. In fact, this type of input or advice isn’t often readily available. While considering how I could more effectively provide guidance, I decided to write a book about decision making. The book concept was very well received at TED, with a dozen leading authorities agreeing to an interview for the book.

This will not be a technical reference about how or why we make the decisions we do, rather, will be a compilation of interviews of leaders in a variety of industries that I believe many will want to hear from. The individuals I interview will include business and industry leaders, the greatest philanthropists on the planet, chiefs of fire and police, artists, musicians, actors, homeless, entrepreneurs, spiritual leaders, teachers, military leaders, politicians and more. The goal is to deliver a compelling compilation of real-life stories about decision making, told through interviews.

I decided to invest in this project because I believe that higher quality decisions will make the world a better place. If we can learn how those whom we respect have made their decisions, perhaps our decisions will be better and we will share the goodness. Worse-case, you may make a better decision that can change your own life for the better – which isn’t such a bad worse-case.

I want your help – I want your participation. If you would like to hear from a specific individual or a type of individual please share it here. If your suggested individual is interviewed then you will be credited in the book. If you have an idea or suggestion, please comment here. No suggestion is too outlandish for me to consider. I want this to be an adventure; something unique, creative and compelling. Along the way, I will post interviews, podcasts and videos to document the progress of the book. I expect this project to last throughout the year. If this sounds interesting, please subscribe to comments and you will be updated with new comments and posts.

Let’s make the world a better place by making better decisions – thank for your generous contribution and time.

Mike

    Mike -

Best Wishes on this project. I will keep it in my thoughts. Some people that come to mind who I would love to see in your book are :
    — @aplusk
    — Aneesh Chopra federal CTO: He is big on collaborations on Govt
    — Someone from Obama's campaign staff

Will keep adding to the list when I get new idea. Good luck and can't wait to see it.

    Best,

Great idea Mike. How about throwing an important philosopher into the mix: Daniel C. Dennett – I think his perspective would be fascinating, considering his focus on evolutionary biology and cognitive science.

    See:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Dennett

If you get an interview with him, can I be your interview assistant-I could hold the microphone, arrange the chairs, whatever. I would encourage you to read his book Darwin's Dangerous Idea if you haven't already. Dennett is great because he hits tough issues head on but with an optimistic and humanistic point of view.

excellent idea Philip! Indeed, I will read his book and try to get him on-board for an interview and, yes, I will involve you one way or another. Thanks for the great suggestion – I love it!

Mike, love this focus and glad you are exploring it. Suggesting Rabbi Ammiel Hirsch of Stephen Wise Free Synagogue here in NYC. An amazing speaker, intellect, person, spent three years as a tank commander in the Israeli Army.during the time of the Israeli Egyptian peace treaty, went on to London School of Economics and practiced law. Has been Senior Rabbi for the better part of this decade. Could offer interesting perspective on decision making , weaving in biblical text, etc…nice juxaposition to tech CEOs!

Judith – this is such an excellent and exciting suggestion. I would love to include Rabbi Ammiel Hirsch. His perspective would add huge value to readers and to the book itself. Thank you very much for the thoughtful suggestion!

  • Judith

Mike, glad you like. Happy to make intro -

George W. Bush, aka “the Decider”. (we learn from mistakes too)

  • http://www.wehelpyourock.com/ Mike Walsh

I'll try to get George W – he's a great addition for a number of reasons. thanks!

  • Jim Storer

Great idea Mike and I'm following along.

I'd recommend you interview someone under ten years old. I'm continually amazed by the wisdom I hear from my girls, before they've had the “benefit” of our educational system. I'll see if my oldest is interested if you are. :-)

Jim – great idea, thanks. I am also amazed with the creative genius of little kids. I'll go offline with follow up. cheers and thanks!

I've been thinking a lot about decisions based on of fear vs. decisions based on whatever is the opposite of fear (love? gratitude? courage?) I think most of us made decisions based on fear–we decide to do one thing because we're trying to protect ourselves from something that may or may not happen in the future. So what would it look like if we took fear out of the equation, or at least kept it from dominating? What if our decisions we're based on running toward something, rather than running away from something else? What kind of decisions would we make then? Would we quit our jobs? Get divorced/married? Start a new business or non-profit? Become a priest or a politician? And how would those decisions affect the people around us? (I don't know who to interview–maybe it's just a theme that runs through your interviews.)

  • http://www.wehelpyourock.com/ Mike Walsh

hi Katrina – great comments! Many of those ideas will thread throughout the book, and many people whom I interview will have made those types of decisions. Some have left very lucrative positions to deliver water to the world's poor, or have left or entered a specific religion, or decided to leave security for something bigger. I hope that you continue to contribute. Please feel free to recommend anyone in the future. I will begin to post interview content at the end of March.
    Cheers!

Children are born without knowledge of limitations or fears, they are taught. My interview choice is someone that exudes the confidence and adaptability that are essential in making difficult decisions; Olympian Lindsey Vonn. She was my inspiration when I learned how to ski last year at 39 years old! I fell allot, had some injuries but persevered to become a better skier than anyone thought possible. All it took was Lindsey to remind me to follow my passion, don’t give up and see were it leads me. Now I am working on applying that to other areas of my life!

Hey everyone – just a quick update. I've been conducting interviews and I'm capturing the on video when I can. For those whom I have interviews in person but not yet captured on video, I intend to reconnect for the video portion. Thus far, I have interviewed a dozen people including Russell Simmons of Def Jam, GlobalGrind, Tony Hsieh from Zappos, Scott Harrison from Charity Water, Robert Gupta of the LA Phliharmonic, Porter Gale of Virgin America, Kostas Mallios of Microsoft; among others.

Please keep your great ideas coming – I appreciate them! I'll be posting videos of a few interviews within the next couple of weeks.

    Cheers.

You could interview Steve Vinton of Village Schools in Tanzania – this is an amazing story of schools being built in this country for the poorest, who would never have been given a chance in life. It is a heart warming story.

Chuck – thanks for the great suggestion. If you can make an introduction, please do. Otherwise, I'll find a way to connect with him. cheers!
